Courts πŸ™„

I picked up my ex in a grocery store parking lot this morning so he could leave his HUGE tow truck somewhere that he wouldn’t get a ticket. We dropped our son off at school and drove downtown to go to child support court. We arrived, paid for parking ($15!), walked from our parking spot to the courthouse, and went in at 7:30am.

First, everyone must go through security just like at the airport, no shoes or anything in your pockets so it’s a long line. I even had to take off my watch. Second, we stand in another line to check in for court. You wait and wait in a long line of people, get to the front, and then a guy asks your names without checking ID (because what insane person would WANT to go to child support court if they didn’t have to) and gives you a ticket. This guy told us to go down to the basement and check in again.

We go down there and of course, it’s 7:45am so nobody is there. We are waiting and this woman comes down and takes our tickets and says, “Have a seat.” Then another lady comes down the stairs and tells us that things have changed and we need to go to the 2nd floor. Oookkkk. We needed our tickets back and had to wait for that which was only mere seconds thankfully. So we go to wait for the elevator and finally get up to the 2nd floor at 7:55. I open the courtroom door and ask if we can come in because it was empty other than the officers of the court and the lady I spoke to. The lady lets us in so we give her our tickets and have a seat. Once people started coming in the courtroom, the officer told us we are not allowed to take any pictures in the court. Umm, ok.

Third was the wait. No food or drinks are allowed in the courtroom (duh). We sat and sat. Around noon, we each took a break and got a candy bar and a soda because we were both starving. While I waited for him to come back, I went outside the courtroom and it was like a party. People sitting in the hallway listening to music and talking, eating snacks, and I had the best time people watching. Then each of us went outside to smoke, my ex doesn’t even smoke, he was that frustrated sitting there all day after working all night. We were afraid we would get called while the other person had gone outside but I guess we didn’t have to worry about that. If they had, we could get pushed to the back of the line and we didn’t want that!

I don’t know WHY but the workers kept passing up our case file to take others even though we were the first people to check in. We sat there until 2pm!!! When we FINALLY get called, after looking at her computer for 5 minutes at our file not saying a word, all she does is reschedule the court date. Again! We were there in September and it got rescheduled to today. Why the f*ck did you make us wait all F’ing day just for that????????? If you can’t tell, I am pissed off to no end. Now we will have to go through all this again in April. She said he needs to make payments or will go to jail. Personally, I don’t see the point in him going to jail. That won’t help him keep his job so he can pay child support. On the other hand, he hasn’t paid in 3 years so he needs something to make him realize he has to pay. The lady gave him the account numbers and phone numbers he needs to make a payment and told him to make them or else “there will be consequences”. Really? That’s it? Geez!

So I drive him back to his truck and come home. I took the dog on a good long walk and now charging my phone and watch because my son wants to go to the gym at 6pm. I do not feel like going to the gym. After today, I want to curl up with a book or Netflix and zone out. So I’m going to try to relax until 6pm and then head up there. I am so done with today. I don’t want to do anything else, I want to relax and sleep. Today was that stupid. I am still not allowed to run which would be the best thing for me to do when I’m angry. I can’t bike off frustration. When I’m walking or running, I seem to get it out more. I guess I’ll find out what works. Maybe the row machine. I don’t know.

Have you had to deal with court recently? What happened?

  1. My goodness thats so very crazy because how they gonna make you wait that long just to reschedule you? If you miss a court date you get in trouble from what I understand so thats kind of a double standard. Wow he hasn’t paid anything in 3 years? At least you are nice enough to ride with him and be cool about everything. I’m proud of you.

  2. That’s awful! Thankfully, my court experiences are as a lawyer, so it tends to be fairly organized – they almost always let people with lawyers in attendance go first, so the clients aren’t stuck paying for the lawyer to sit and do nothing. Random question – do you have a suit? If you do, I might wear it next time you’re in court. They might think you’re a lawyer and move you to the front of the line. Even a blazer might do the trick.

  3. I’m so sorry. That’s ridiculous. I haven’t ever dealt with this, but I know people who have and then the reschedule it. I’m like what the hell are you doing that for? It doesn’t make any sense. He needs to get off of his ass and pay the damn child support. I’m with you what’s the good of putting him in jail it’s not going to get to pay it any sooner or faster. It’s just dumb. I’m so sorry Julie. I can’t believe you had to sit there all day. That makes me mad as hell.
