Good morning on the Good Friday ๐Ÿ˜€

Howdy! Even though it’s 3:30am, I am a bit chipper. Of course, I haven’t given up sugar completely yet so why wouldn’t I be?

No school today for the kiddo but I still have to work. Lucky kid, not so lucky me. I will be taking Styled to get her hair done and Cranky to the doctor because she says her back hurts. This is my day. It is supposed to be a beautiful day too. Right now in the middle of the night, the temperature is 64 and our high today is supposed to be 80. These are the good days before the sizzle of summer is here.

So yesterday was difficult for me. I had to make this huge decision and I have over thought it to death and I am going to do the diet. I am not completely starting until Monday either. I am doing kind of what weekday dieters do before they start a diet. I am eating and drinking what I still have before I completely go into this. Not EVERYTHING mind you, but the original plan was to not have energy drinks anymore as of April 1st (no fooling either) but now I am just going to make that no more soda after these next 2 days. I was running out anyway so why not? Am I ready to have a headache for a few days? Not really but might as well get it over and done with!

The goal is 20 net carbs a day. That’s total carbs minus fiber (I had to look that up). One regular soda has 40 carbs (Dr. Pepper), the energy drink I prefer only has 29 and if I wasn’t cutting sugar out completely, I would probably stick to having one of these a day. Alas, I cannot. No more sugar. No more toast even unless it’s keto friendly.

I went to the store yesterday and spent about $50 on different kinds of meat. I wanted to give you guys the list of the choices I got. Tell me what you think.

Chorizo – oh I love this! This makes my favorite breakfast tacos even though now I won’t eat the corn tortilla (unless any of you know where I can get carb free tortillas?).

Pork loins – I have stomach issues sometimes with pork chops and loins but I thought I might as well try it. Plus it gives my son a new meat to try. No, he’s never eaten pork in his entire 12 years. No bacon, no sausage, nothing!

Chicken thighs – because I like chicken and they are easy to cook. I prefer dark meat (and I am not trying to be sexual) because it has more flavor and is not as dry as chicken breasts.

Sausage links and patties – good for anytime, not just breakfast and usually if I only eat one or two, the pork doesn’t bother me in this form. Plus it’s just darn good!

Ground beef – you can do tons with some ground beef! Hamburgers, tacos, plain, all kinds of stuff. Please send recipe suggestions!

Thin cut steak – more beef! I haven’t been able to eat steak much other than chopped steak but I thought I would try this since it was thin cut. Maybe if I take my time and chew each bite for 3 minutes, it will help prevent issues. Usually, with a regular steak, I’m so full after 2 bites and if I eat 3, it’s coming back up. So I hope this isn’t a problem but I only got 2 to try it out.

The list wouldn’t be complete without fish! I got cod because I love it. My mom said she likes sole which I’m not sure I’ve ever had. I like cod the best but also like trout and a couple others. I am not a salmon fan and of course that’s probably the healthiest fish out there. Oh well!

Veggies – WHY do my favorite vegetables have carbs??? Carrots, celery, asparagus, and even bell peppers! So if I want a veggie, I have to account for it in my carb intake for the day. Wow, just wow. I was thinking celery with peanut butter would be a great snack too!

I already had bacon and cheese and eggs and peanut butter at home so I didn’t need that. I did find out that the Babybel cheese I love is free of carbs so I can still eat the crap out of those too. When the woman told me high fat, high protein, extremely low carb, I asked, “Do you mean you’re putting me on the Keto diet?” She smiles and nodded and seemed excited that I knew what it was. Weird.

She also told me I need more sodium on this plan. Before I had my son, I had high blood pressure. I mean HIGH. 200/120 high! It has been normal now for years because I lost weight and was on medication until it went down. I haven’t had to be on medication since. Now I even taste the salt in soda. So having to up my sodium might be the hardest part of this for me. I figure there is a bit in the foods already so I hope I don’t need to add more. I am very afraid of getting high blood pressure again.

All suggestions appreciated. I’m just so afraid that this kind of diet is not sustainable for life and I don’t want to gain weight if I introduce carbs back later. That’s why I was in such a tizzy about this yesterday. I keep reminding myself that this was normal eating life before processed foods were started being made. I’m still nervous but I know I have lots of friends that have my back so I will do it.

I was within my calories yesterday and did 30 minutes of bedtime yoga last night for exercise.

  1. I can’t do this unfortunately, because I don’t eat meat.
    But I love the picture of the veggies! I have forgotten there are so many.
    I am going to use Broccoli in the pasta tonight!

  2. Hello. How are you? You remind me of me and my daughter is 14 now. Had to chuckling a bit too. I look forward to reading more of your posts. I also want to say have a Great Happy Easter or Good Friday. Both my other half and I need to be on diets. He needs to be on a low Carb and cholesterol diet. So I will probably learn something from you.

  3. Good luck starting on this Keto journey. I tried it once before and it’s not hard to do unless you’re like me and can’t live without rice and bread :). The hardest part for me was getting over that “keto flu” which I never did. I was doing really good for about two weeks when all of the sudden I started feeling horrible, everything hurt. I did some research and it seems that the more you rely on carbs, the worse the “keto flu” can be since your body is basically going through withdrawals. Try to stay really hydrated and keep up your electrolytes as it’s supposed to help. I’m thinking about giving it another try now that I’m a bit better with my food planning and general health. Looking forward to reading about your experience.

  4. I low carb because I’m diet controlled diabetic. I used to have “low carb” bread until my neurologist rolled his eyes and said there’s no such thing, so I just cut out grains. The only advice I will give is that you should definitely eat a lot of fiber type veges because the high fat can block you up (if you know what I mean). Oh and I LOLd at “I’m not trying to be sexual” ! Too funny! Good for you, I look forward to following this next step on your journey and to hearing about some good recipes! I make “fat bombs”. If you love peanut butter, google “peanut butter fat bomb”. It’s basically a ball of cream cheese, peanut butter, coconut oil and a bit of sweetener. I am also completely jealous of your meat prices! In Australia, chicken thighs are around $10 per KILOGRAM!

    1. Oh wow, 10kg is insane!
      Iโ€™m so glad there are lots of people on here that read this and can help and support each other! So I guess thereโ€™s no โ€œlow carbโ€ tortillas then. Oh well. It was good without it too!
      And yes, fiber is important. The more fiber a food has, the less those carbs count too! ๐Ÿ˜‚

      1. I don’t think there are low carb tortillas, sadly. You could experiment with things like almond meal etc. There are low carb high protein flour alternatives but they tend to be astronomically priced and I find they play havoc with my stomach. I think that the less processed you can keep the food, the better. I’m still working out this whole low carb thing. I’ve been doing it for a year now and have heard so many different things from the same bloody doctors! They keep changing their minds. I’d not heard of increasing salt. That’s really interesting. And yes, it is so good to all be here together, it can feel a bit overwhelming. x

      2. I was told that you need more sodium because your body does not retain the water anymore once you are in ketosis. Iโ€™m going to be doing a bunch of research on it over the weekend and will post about it.

  5. You’re going to feel so much better after a few weeks without soda and energy drinks, just you watch!!! & I laughed out loud about “I’m not being sexual” ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚ I def prefer thighs over breasts too!
    You can look through my recipe reviews for recipe suggestions, we use ground beef a lot!
    I hope you’re able to eat the steak without getting sick! & aw, salmon is my favorite but I’m not actually sure if it’s the healthiest? I love all fish lol.
    What do the numbers mean by the photos of the veggies? How many carbs are in them or how many you are allowed to eat?

    1. Those numbers are the carbs in each. It was amazing to me!
      Thank you for the support. I hope to be more healthy with this diet. Iโ€™m not quitting smoking yet either!
      I am drinking the rest of my sodas! I have 7 left and I WILL drink them all! (Insert maniacal laughter here) HAHAHAHA ๐Ÿ˜‚

      1. Oh dang! I didn’t even know veggies had carbs! Wowza. I have quit smoking during the day but I still smoke at work sometimes! It’s tough to quit! Fine! You can drink those last sodas & then no more… your feet need to feel better!! ๐Ÿ˜€
